This file contains a description of the major changes and enhancements made to StickyBusiness since the original user's manual was written. The changes described below are current as of version 1.0.7 of the program, which was first shipped to users in July 1989.
Enhancements Overview
• A Delete Layout feature in the File menu that lets you selectively delete layouts saved with the Store Layout option.
• Several small enhancements to the Set Preferences option of the File menu.
• An Edit Merge File feature in the Special menu. This mini-word processor lets you edit existing merge data files and create new ones, without having to exit StickyBusiness.
• A Grab Icon feature in the Special menu with which you can import icons from disk files and use them in your designs.
• An Import EPS Graphic feature in the Special menu that lets you incorporate Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) graphics into StickyBusiness.
• A Window menu. It's now possible to open several windows at a time within StickyBusiness, including the Template, Merge Data, Clipboard and Icon Palette windows. The Window menu lets you move quickly and easily from one open window to another.
• The functionality of the Template Window has been expanded to allow you to work with very large labels or forms, such as Avery's 5165 8.5" x 11" label or envelopes.
• The functionality of the Serial Number feature has been expanded to allow you to specify a number of repetitions for each serial number object. This provides the capability to print several labels with the same serial number before the number is incremented.
Finally, many minor improvements and bug fixes have been incorporated into StickyBusiness to improve the program's overall performance.

THE FILE MENU
Delete Layout...
--Deletes a design layout that was saved to disk with the Store Layout command.
Choose the Delete Layout command in the File menu to display a dialog box listing the stored layouts from which you can delete one or more.
Set Preferences...
--Sets defaults for some StickyBusiness features.
Choose Set Preferences in the File menu to display a dialog box for changing the StickyBusiness start-up defaults:
Folder Containing Preferred Templates: To change the name of the folder that contains your preferred templates, simply delete or edit the current name (it's called "Preferred•Templates" when you first get StickyBusiness).
Text Attributes: To change the displayed default text attributes, press the Change button to display the Font, Size, Style and Align submenus, from which you can select the desired default values.
T-Square Attributes: Select the size of the smallest increment to be displayed when the T-square guides are moved across your templates. You can choose tenths of an inch, sixty-fourths of an inch or centimeters. The increment you choose is reflected by the unit of measurement and the numbers displayed in the T-Square Measurement indicator when you return to the template window. If you choose centimeters, the displayed numbers represent tenths of a centimeter (millimeters). Also specify the magnet's "strength" by indicating in pixels how close an object must be to a T-square guide before it will be forced to align with the guide when the magnet is turned on.
Graphic Control Attributes: Specify in pixels (1-5) the scroll increment--the increment in which you want imported graphics to move when you reposition them. Specify as a percentage (1, 2, 5 or 10 percent) the increment by which you want imported graphics to increase or decrease in size when you press the Graphic Sizing controls.
THE SPECIAL MENU
Edit Merge File...
--Lets you edit existing merge data files or create new data files from within StickyBusiness.
This option functions like a mini-word processor. Choose Edit Merge File to display the Standard Open dialog box for selecting the file you want to edit. If you select an existing data file, StickyBusiness displays it in the Merge Data window. If you press the dialog box's New button, StickyBusiness opens an empty window, in which you can create a new data file from scratch.
This feature is useful for inserting a header record which defines the fields to be used in a print merge operation.
Note that tabs are replaced by "•" characters. These indicators help you discriminate between tabs and simple spaces in the text file.
When you finish editing or creating the data file, save it using the Save or Save As commands. If you try to close the Merge Data window without saving your changes, StickyBusiness displays a Save, Discard or Cancel prompt.
Grab Icon...
--Imports icons from application resource files for use in StickyBusiness designs.
Grab Icon lets you copy icons from disk files onto the Clipboard, from which you can paste them into StickyBusiness graphic frames. You can use this feature to import icons from other applications and from commercially marketed icon libraries. You can even read icons from your Desktop file.
Choose this command to display a directory dialog box. Locate and select the application or disk file that contains the icon you want to import. StickyBusiness opens the Icon Palette window which displays all the icons contained in the file. To choose an icon, simply select it and copy it to the Clipboard. Icons copied onto the Clipboard can then be pasted into graphic frames, then sized and cropped like any imported graphic.
Import EPS Graphic...
--Lets you import Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) graphics into StickyBusiness.
This option lets you take advantage of a LaserWriter's capability to print high-resolution EPS graphics.
Choose this command to display Standard Open dialog box, which you can use to locate and select the EPS graphic you want to import. When you select an EPS graphic, StickyBusiness copies it onto the Clipboard, from which it can be pasted into any graphic frame.
Once you've pasted an EPS graphic into a graphic frame, you can size, crop and move it like any other graphic. Although EPS graphics look like standard bit-mapped graphics on the screen, they print in the highest resolution of which the printer is capable.
THE WINDOW MENU
The latest version of StickyBusiness lets you keep several windows open at once so that you can move among them by means of the Window menu. This menu lists the names of all open StickyBusiness windows and may include the Template, Edit Data, Clipboard and Icon Palette windows. To make a new window active, simply choose it from the Window menu.
PRINT MERGING FROM THE MERGE DATA WINDOW
If the Merge Data window is open when you select the Print Merge command in the File menu, the Standard Open dialog will contain an additional button entitled "Merge Window." Selecting this button instead of the Open button will cause StickyBusiness to perform the print merge by reading the data directly from the Merge Data window.
USING THE SERIAL NUMBER REPETITION FEATURE
Normally, a serial number is printed with a new value on each label (i.e., a repetition of 1). There may be times, however, when you might want to print the same number on several labels before incrementing. To accomplish this in StickyBusiness, we have added a parameter to the Serial Number dialog entitled "Repetitions during print". The default value is 1, but you may specify any integer value up to 10. Since this value is set independently for each serial number, it is possible to specify different repetitions for each serial number that appears on a label.
Example 1. You wish to print one serial number label to be placed directly on your product, another to be placed inside the instruction manual, and a third for the outside of the package. Place one serial number object on the label and specify a repetition value of 3.
Example 2. You wish to print a two-part I.D. number on your labels, one that increments every four labels, and the other every two labels. You would define two serial number objects on your label, one with a repetition value of 4 and the other with a repetition value of 2. Printing 12 labels might then yield the following sequence:
1001 001 1001 001 1001 002 1001 002
1002 003 1002 003 1002 004 1002 004
1003 005 1003 005 1003 006 1003 006
NOTES ON WORKING WITH EPS GRAPHICS
EPS graphics tend to require a lot of memory. Even when you reduce the graphic in size on the screen, it will require approximately the same amount of memory to store the image definition. For this reason, we have set the application memory size at 500K for MultiFinder. This should be adequate for normal use. If you find that StickyBusiness is unable to perform certain operations due to lack of memory, you will probably want to increase the application memory size in the MultiFinder "Get Info..." dialog. On the other hand, if you never use EPS graphics with StickyBusiness, you may safely decrease this value. We would not recommend running with less than 200K, however.
Users of Cricket Draw please note that versions prior to 1.1 contained serious bugs in the EPS file-generation code. These bugs cannot be worked around and will cause unpredictible results if you try to import a graphic created with them into StickyBusiness. All of these bugs were corrected in version 1.1.
TEMPLATE FILE NAMES
The templates distributed with the current release have been named using a format which should provide sufficient descriptive information to allow you to quickly identify the template you desire. This format is:
such as, "AV 4266 [3x5] Index Card". The Distributor Code is a two- or three-character code representing the name of the distributor. The name of the distributor is found in the name of the folder containing the templates. For example, Avery templates are denoted with the code AV, Moore with the code MO, Williams & Macias with the code WMI, etc. The product code is the code used by the distributor in their catalogs. The height and width are given in inches and generally rounded to the nearest hundredth (although some were rounded to the nearest tenth). For example, 3-7/16 would be listed as 3.44 instead of 3.4375. Templates released in the future will be named using this convention, unless this amount of detail is not necessary.
PRINTING TIPS
1) You may encounter some label forms which have a left margin that is too wide to allow the recommeded horizontal alignment on ImageWriters (pages 6-1 through 6-5 in your StickyBusiness User's Manual). In such cases, slide the label form as far to the left as possible in the printer. StickyBusiness will compensate for the wide margin.
2) We highly recommend against placing design objects near the edge of a label. Most label forms have a tolerance of 1/16 of an inch, and therefore, designs placed too close to the edge of a label may be printed off the label. In addition, slight misalignments near the edge of a label are more obvious than misalignments more distant from the edge. For a more complete discussion of this issue, refer to your Template Maker User's Manual.
